In Pakistan, the Dowry in Arabic is called Jahez (derived from Islamic Jahez-e-Fatimi). With more than 2,000 dowry-related deaths each year and an annual rate of more than 2.45 deaths per 100,000 women victims of dowry-related violence, Pakistan has had the highest number of dowry deaths per 100,000 women in the world. Centuries ago, Mahr and Sadaq thought something else in Morocco. Mahr was the purchase price paid for the bride by the groom`s family to the bride`s father or guardian, while Sadaq was the engagement gift offered by the groom to the bride. Over time, the difference has disappeared and they are now the same, but different from the practice of dowry. Dowry in India is not limited to Hindus or any particular religion. It is very widespread. For example, Indian Muslims call the dowry as Jahez, justifying the practice with regard to jahez-e-fatimi. The Islamists categorize Jahez into two categories: the first contains some essential items for the bride`s outfit as well as for married life. The other consists of precious goods, clothing, jewelry, a lot of money for the groom`s family, which is billed after negotiation. The Jahez often far exceeds the cost of the Barat. Parents were expected to provide their daughters with a dowry as a form of money for marriage and sometimes as a kind of anticipated inheritance.
As a general rule, depending on the status of the couples and the type of marriage contract they have accepted, this dowry could either be used to help the groom create a new home or to protect against the possibility of abuse inflicted on the bride by her husband and family, since in the latter cases , the dowry may have to be returned. A dowry also offered an element of financial security in widowhood, especially when there are young children in the family.
